Hydrocortisone
This ingredient is a type of medicine called a corticosteroid. Hydrocortisone is a mild corticosteroid that is applied to the skin to treat a wide variety of inflammatory skin disorders. Inflammation of the skin happens due to irritation of the skin, and is caused by the release of various substances, such as histamine. (Please refer below to the antihistamine Diphenhydramine, which is also in this product. ) These substances cause blood vessels to widen, resulting in the irritated area becoming red, swollen, itchy and painful. When hydrocortisone is applied to the skin it works by acting inside the skin cells to decrease the release of these inflammatory substances. This reduces swelling, redness and itch.
Pramoxine
Pramoxine is a topical anesthetic. It reduces the sensation of pain or itching on the skin.
It is used as a surface or local anesthetic, but it is not chemically related to the better known topical anesthetics such as benzocaine or tetracaine. Much like the “caine” products, pramoxine works by stopping nerves from sending pain signals to the brain.
Diphenhydramine
Diphenhydramine belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines or histamine blockers. Histamine is a chemical produced by the body that stimulates the symptoms of an allergic reaction such as inflammation of the skin, airways or tissues, rashes, itching of the skin, eyes or nose, nasal congestion or narrowing of the airways. As diphenhydramine is an antihistamine it blocks the action and therefore effects, of histamine. When used topically, this results in the relief of the typical symptoms from allergic reactions of the skin as mentioned above.
Lidocaine
Lidocaine and related caine-type products compose a large group of local anesthetics found mainly in topical, nonprescription products used to numb or soothe the skin. Lidocaine acts by temporarily blocking the pathway of impulses that are normally sent to the brain from the site of pain.
Camphor
When rub into the skin, camphor has weak analgesic properties which is useful in this product to reduce the intensity and severity of itching.
Menthol
When applied topically in very low concentrations, methol selective stimulates nerve endings for cold which leads to the sensation of coolness. Some local analgesic or pain relief may also accompany this effect. With slightly high concentrations the nerve endings will be stimulated with a sensation of warmth or heat. As a result, after menthol is applied topically there may first be a sensation of coolness then a slight prickly and warming sensation.
